Yes, we’re new, but our experience isn’t. We have over 40 years of valuable experience in the self storage industry, making us an extra reliable partner you can trust with your belongings, whether for business or personal use.

It all began not in property or warehousing – but on the podium of international motorsport, when Alastair Caldwell used his passion and drive within F1 to open up the first self storage facility in the UK.

Fast forward 40 years, and Extra Space Self Storage has expanded to four locations – two in North London and two in Birmingham. All four locations are easily accessible and have extra security measures for your peace of mind. Your convenience is our top priority!

Experts in self storage since 1983

Our story began in 1983, when self storage was still a new concept, comfortably making us pioneers in the industry. When we opened our first store, we promised to deliver an exceptional and memorable service, which is something we hold onto more than four decades later.

During F1 tours in the United States, Alastair encountered modern self-storage facilities for the first time and recognised an unmet need back home. Inspired by this, he decided to take a bold leap, launching a self-storage facility in Colnbrook in 1983 – initially built from shipping containers. The family-run self storage business has grown from strength to strength over the past four decades.

The high-octane years

Born in England and raised partly in New Zealand, Alastair Caldwell found his calling under a chassis, joining the legendary McLaren Formula 1 team in 1967. Alastair quickly jumped up the ranks with his natural ability to lead, eventually becoming team manager during McLaren’s most iconic eras.

And if Alastair wasn’t enough of a legend already, under his direction, the team managed to secure world championships, too, with James Hunt’s victory in 1976. This will be a moment forever cemented in the history of racing, as well as the history of Extra Space Self Storage.

Alastair was more than a manager. He was also an innovator who personally spearheaded engineering advances that allowed McLaren to have that competitive edge. He introduced game-changing ideas, such as a six-speed gearbox, lightweight starting systems, and effective aerodynamic enhancements.
